Cambodia is a much underrated yet stunning country with beautiful mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, beaches, islands, and vibrant and interesting cities. My story and Vlog today is about Phnom Penh and how truly amazing it is.

Phnom Penh – City Life

The capital, Phnom Penh, is probably the most diverse, hustling, and bustling city I’ve ever encountered. It’s the wild wild East in the sense that you feel 100% free, and can go about your day without being disturbed by annoying people, police, or red tape!

But, I have two warnings of caution:

  1. Traffic: The traffic is heavy and the drivers or bike riders are a little crazy and unpredictable. So, it’s advisable to be extraordinarily careful when you attempt to cross any street on foot. Essentially, they do not stop for pedestrians in Phom Penh, even when you try to cross on a zebra crossing. They pretend not to see you or, dart around you at all cost to not stop! That’s serious real danger, so be super aware of that!
  2. Phone Theft: I’ve had 2 phones lifted in Phom Penh in 2 years. This is not unique to Phnom Penh – it happens in every large city, whether in the East or West.

How to avoid getting your phone nicked:

  1. Never walk around with it in your hand, checking maps or anything else.
  2. If you must look for directions, walk away from the street and go and stand close to a shop, cafe, restaurant, or hotel, with your face and hands to the wall, and then look.
  3. Do not leave your phone sitting on a table if you go to the bathroom.
  4. Definitely do NOT check your phone if you are riding a motorbike – that’s a 100% guaranteed and dumb way to lose your phone.

Those are the only downsides of Phnom Penh City, which are minor compared to other big cities worldwide, where theft, assaults, stabbings, and even shootings happen daily – especially in the West.

Phnom Penh is a very safe city to walk and enjoy. You do not need to worry both day and night, if you don’t get drunk, or high, and follow my advice and simple logic.

Phnom Penh –  Living

Phnom Penh is a carefree city with tons of things to do and places to see – Museums, Pagodas, Temples, Parks, Waterparks, The Riverside, Casinos, Swimming Pools, and amazing Hotels with Rooftop Bars and Pools.

The food on offer is fantastic, whether local street food, BBQs, or elegant Western restaurants.

But not just that – the amazing thing about Cambodia is its people! The Cambodian people are the most welcoming, hospitable, friendly, lovely, kind, and helpful folks I have ever met during my world travels. They smile all day long and never complain, despite many living in or close to poverty.

I never get tired of Phnom Penh, which is why I come here every second week to work, chill, and have fun, and so should you!

After living in Cambodia for 2 years and discovering most of the country, I can guarantee you will love it just like I do.
