I Want My Food Healthy and Clean, do You?

"No food is bad food!" The other day someone really told me that.

Food is a funny thing, well not really — people’s perception of food and what’s healthy or not can be funny, or more like astonishing.

Saying all food is good, means there’s no unhealthy food. Wrong!

There are significant differences and facts about food, explaining which foods are healthy or not.

However, the sad truth is; that the majority of the world’s population doesn’t know these facts and the effects food has on the body and mind.

The right type of food (and exercise) are vital for a robust immune system, to prevent illnesses, weight gain, and several other daily health issues folks face.

To say all foods are equal, doesn’t make sense and simply isn’t correct.

Obesity and diabetes are two of the biggest health issues on the planet today. In comparison with other health issues, they are largely neglected.

Why is that? Several reasons.

Food is a necessity for everyone. Nobody has to drink alcohol, smoke, buy a car, or go to the movies.

But everyone must eat!

That makes the food industry the most valuable and important business and money-making sector.

Most folks need to eat 3 times or more per day, very often, price is, therefore, the main deciding factor on what you eat, rather than the quality.

This is understandable, as your food costs add up to be your largest monthly expenditure, followed by your mortgage, rent, or car payments.

Therefore, most everyone cuts their costs as much as possible when it comes to food-purchasing decisions, often leading to your health declining, and possibly a shorter lifespan.

The Problem.

The food industry is very much aware of this reality and therefore caters to it perfectly.

Meaning, the conventional food production companies source, produce, distribute, and market are usually the cheapest types of foods to maximize sales.

Unfortunately (my observation), around 80% of the food choices available to us are not particularly healthy and can lead to overeating — stimulants in certain ingredients make you quickly feel satisfied and full.

However, that sensation soon disappears and hunger returns.

The result is overeating.

The biggest 2 culprits in most people’s diets are:

1. Wheat and anything made from it

2. Sugar

The reality is 80% to 90% of supermarket shelves are loaded with items containing these 2 ingredients.

Examples:

Cereals, Bread, Cakes, Cookies, Candy, Pasta, Noodles, Rice, Pizza, Fruit Juices, Snacks, Treats, Yogurt, Milk, Protein Bars, Potato Chips, Pretzels, and much more.

Just walk around a supermarket and observe what’s there. If you break it down, you’ll be lucky to find 10% to 15% (depending on the store) natural fresh produce, such as:

Meat, Fish, Seafood, Vegetables, Fruit, Eggs, Olive or Avocado Oil, sugar-free Yogurts, and so on.

The marketing machines of the large food producers and sellers conveniently entice you to consume mostly unhealthy food and drinks, causing people to become overweight and sick.

What’s the Solution?

The solutions are all there in front of us, but often are unpopular, expensive and certainly not beneficial to the bottom lines of the food giants.

Step 1. Go back to Nature

Stop purchasing all the packed, and processed foods in supermarkets.

Instead try this:

  • Make a point of purchasing only fresh foods
  • Reduce or stop the consumption of wheat-based foods
  • Eliminate sugar from your diet completely
  • Check all labels to see if there’s any added sugar
  • Start cooking from scratch at home — then you know what you’re eating
  • Eliminate all fast-foods!
  • Place a ban on junk-food!

Step 2. Educate yourself about Food and its Effects on your Body.

You’ve got 24/7 full access to the internet and can look up anything you want.

Instead of Googling useless things, and scrolling your social media whenever you can, make use of your phone by researching food, drinks and the various diets available, as well as other people’s experiences. Research!

You’re on a diet already, you just don’t know it — it’s called the Standard American Diet, or Western Diet.

I’m going to be blatantly direct here: the SAD (Standard American Diet) is largely unhealthy.

Don’t believe me? I’m not asking you to. Look around everywhere you go and make note of how healthy or unhealthy people look. You be the judge of the scale of the problem.

Summing it Up.

Not all foods are equal, not by a long shot.

Pretty much anything that’s packaged, wrapped and has a long shelf-life is not your friend.

I know cost and budgets are an issue, yet it is possible to adjust to a healthy diet without breaking the bank or credit card.

Buy frozen meats so you don’t have to worry about wasting fresh meat. Fresh meat that’s frozen is still fresh when you defrost it, yet you can control when you eat it!

Make an effort to seek out healthier natural markets, even better, farmers markets. You’d be surprised how affordable farmers markets can be. These days you can find them in pretty much every city, town or village.

Important Note: By doing this you’re supporting local, ethical and sustainable businesses, as well as doing your bit to help improve the environment.

You are What You Eat!
